The Corn Cake Kings

Julian Mokhtar has been playing professionally since 1980 and is best known known as lead guitarist for the legendary Malaysian band Blues Gang which he joined in that year. Over the next 13 years he recorded 10 albums with the band, making numerous TV and concert appearances as well. Since 1993 he has been pursuing a solo career, two highlights of which were jamming with blues legend Buddy Guy at the Hard Rock Cafe in Kuala Lumpur in 1996, and taking the stage at the jam party after the 1997 annual Kansas City Jazz & Blues Festival held at the Grand Emporium, Kansas City, USA.

Julian self-produced and recorded an album, “About Time”, completed in 2000 with a limited run of 500 copies. Other activities include several stints in Akita, Japan performing with fellow Malaysian singer Karen Nunis Blackstone and session work. Besides performing, Julian is an accomplished guitar repairman and also custom designs and builds electric guitars.

The Corn cake kings was formed sometime in 2005. The two mainstays are Julian Mokhtar (guitar & vocals) and Aznan Aziz (guitar, vocals and harmonica). If required they take on additional musicians such as a percussionist, bassist etc. The group’s sound is primarily guitar driven, acoustic, electric or mix and match.

Julian had met Aznan Aziz aka. Nan Blues after seeing him perform. Aznan had himself been playing music for many years, sharpening his abilities by busking and performing gigs. The two discovered that they not only like the same music but are the same age (Nan is a day older). The band has performed at various venues in KL and PJ such as Little Havana, Finnegans Irish Pub, Noblacktie and Ol’ Skool bistro. Their longest running gig was at Malones Irish pub in KLCC, once a week for a year and a half.

Their repertoire of choice is Southern rock, Folk/country rock, classic rock and some reggae, all linked by a shared love and feel for and blues and R&B.  However they are also able to do a good job on classic and contemporary popular songs as well.

The Strollers2

Hussein Idris (an original member of “Strollers”), Desi and Casper (two ex members of the “Memories” Band) decided to make a comeback to the music scene solely out of  their love of music. So they got together and formed “The Strollers2” in August, 2008.

Before “THE STROLLERS2” were formed, they made a survey around Kuala Lumpur and noticed that there were not many Bands performing Hits of the 60’s, 70’s & 80′s in the city clubs and cafes. So with their old fans in mind, they decided to hit the scene to meet the demand for music from the ‘Golden Era’ especially, Rock n’ Roll, R&B and Pop Genres.

They now perform mostly Number 1 Hits of an era gone by and thus ‘Bringing on Back the Golden Memories of Yesteryears’ for you.

Hearing good old  “EVERGREENS” & “OLDIES” songs being sung by bands of today are hard to come by and many of us in our 40’s and above long for such live entertainment. Just one night with “THE STROLLERS2” and you will get a chance to revive back those good old memories again.

D’FRESCO dance group have been involved in dancing scene since the early 90s, comprises dancers in many background; HANO (contemporary jazz/modern dance), JOSHUA (contemparary jazz/ballet), LYNETTE (contemporary jazz/hiphop/modern dance), LAN (traditional/modern dance), LYNDA (traditional/modern dance), ICE (hiphop/MJ choreographer) and INA (contemporary jazz/modern dance). Experiences in conducting all kind of performances, such as annual dinner, product launching, family day, grand opening, birthday, wedding, backup dancers for singer/impersonator-Micheal Jackson, Elvis Presley, Boy George, Lady Gaga, Shakira, Pussycat Doll, Austin Power to name a few and whatever the clients wish.

Aiza Belly Dancer

Aiza was exposed to Belly arts since 1995 supported by my mother who lived in Dubai & recently moved to Riyadh Saudi Arabia. She self taught till 1998 until she was coached by Andline Sibang a.k.a Anne. She was influenced by World Class Belly Dancers such as Caroleena, Jillina, Suhaila & Rachel Brice. Aiza was also a belly dance tutor in Y-Fitness Centre Klang, The Gym Hartamas, Linda Jasmine Performing Arts Studio Ampang, Happy Performing Art Selayang, Celebrity Fitness One Utama, Ultimax Dance Studio Cheras, Rainbow Dance Fac3 Taman Desa, Yoga Dance Studio Bangsar and So U Can Dance Studio Cheras. Her specialty is performing one of a kind Belly dance with baby phython as well as fire eating which is unusual for any belly dancers to perform.

MJ SUREN

On 17th June a huge fan of Michael Jackson, S. Surendran was born in Kuala Lumpur. Music played a large part in his life and no artist more so than the “King” himself Michael Jackson. Since the tender age of 5 Suren began to emulate the “King of pop” displaying an incredible natural ability to perform MJ’s signature moves. He learned to reproduce every move and vocal vibration of the icon as he was a hardcore fan. He began to perform to Jackson’s songs from his childhood throughout his adolescence.

His talent caught entertainment & talent companies’ attention and they approached his parents, which were turned down by his responsible parents quoting “first he should concentrate and finish his education for the benefit of his future”. His parents were very supportive of his dream, but they did not encourage him to engage in an entertainment life full time during his education period. In this era of his teens Suren balanced his performance and studies through keeping his performance as part time, consequently satisfying his parents. He danced his heart out in every show opportunity and practiced even harder to recreate the MJ experience.

This sparked the enthusiasm in Suren to be an all round professional entertainer like his idol. While completing his education during his youth Suren won numerous competitions e.g. Look Like a Star in Hankyu Jaya, Taman Maluri MIC youth talent show, Church of Christ Talent Show, The MJ Dance Competition in  Plaza Ampang City and etc.(Earning him the title MJ Suren or Suren Jackson)

Once Suren completed his education and ventured into his adulthood he began impersonating MJ professionally and became a true Michael Jackson tribute artist. MJ Suren a devoted fan blessed with the same height 5 ft. 10” and innate inexplicable physical similarities as the “King of Pop” himself. He utilizes these attributes in concurrence with up to date makeup, perfect costume replication, exact MJ attitude and ground breaking dance movements to reproduce the “King of pop” experience. “The stage has been the most comfortable place to reinvent my passion and the best way I could express my feelings” according to MJ Suren. Prior to Michael Jackson’s untimely death, MJ Suren has performed as a Michael Jackson tribute artist for more than 12 years professionally. He has performed all over Malaysia including Sabah & Sarawak for uncountable events from weddings to birthdays, night clubs to hotels, corporate dinner to open air shows. He was booked for multiple road shows by Telekom Malaysia for more than 2 months each time. MJ Suren is one of the 3 MJ impersonators hired by Astro to do a tribute on Michael Jackson’s 25th Anniversary of Thriller which aired in Astro. He was also covered by the local newspaper “The Star” for his performance on a New Year’s Eve at Bangsar village. He even performed alongside Malaysia’s well known artist’s Francisca Peters, One Nation MC, Fabulous Cat, Darkey from “The keys” and so many others. MJ Suren won numerous competitions as a MJ tribute artist e.g. Be a Star Competition in Summit, Michael Jackson Tribute Competition in Brem Mall, Michael Jackson Dance Competition in KL Central. He undertakes charity shows each year for different types of organizations and performs for underprivileged children with the intention of seeing a smile on their faces.

Since Michael Jackson’s tragic passing, MJ Suren has become one of the most respected and sought after Michael Jackson tribute artist in Malaysia, performing several memorial shows throughout the country. Even though there has been quite a number of shows flowing in, MJ Suren and his management team makes sure each show is designed to cater the expectation of the client and is performed as perfectly as possible. MJ Suren is a perfectionist trying to do justice to Michael Jackson and his performance. The goal of MJ Suren is to accurately portray Michael Jackson from his “he he” right down to his moonwalk.
